    Hydroxypropyl-gamma-cyclodextrin (HPγCD) is a modified cyclodextrin derivative. It is obtained by introducing hydroxypropyl groups onto the gamma-cyclodextrin molecule.     Hydroxypropyl-gamma-cyclodextrin (HP-γ-CD) exhibits increased water solubility compared to its parent compound, gamma-cyclodextrin. At 25°C, HP-γ-CD can reach a solubility of up to 80g/100ml in water. This enhanced solubility is attributed to the hydroxypropyl groups attached to the cyclodextrin molecule, which increase its hydrophilicity and improve its interaction with water molecules.

    Furthermore, it’s important to note that HP-γ-CD is not a single pure compound but rather a mixture of multiple substituted compounds. The introduction of hydroxypropyl groups onto the gamma-cyclodextrin structure leads to the coexistence of various substitution patterns within the HP-γ-CD molecule. This structural diversity contributes to the versatility of HP-γ-CD and its ability to accommodate a wide range of guest molecules.

    Due to the increased complexity and structural variations, HP-γ-CD exhibits unique properties compared to pure gamma-cyclodextrin. Specifically, the presence of multiple substitution sites and patterns makes it more challenging for HP-γ-CD to form inclusion crystallization with guest molecules. Inclusion crystallization refers to the formation of well-defined crystalline inclusion complexes where guest molecules are encapsulated within the cyclodextrin cavity. The reduced propensity for inclusion crystallization in HP-γ-CD can be attributed to the steric hindrance caused by the hydroxypropyl groups, hindering the perfect alignment required for crystallization.
